Today Iran is a very gender segregated nation. By law all women have to wear the chador (the veil) when in public and when men that aren't related to them are in their house. In public women have to be completely covered, only their faces and hands can be exposed. We see this in Persepolis when Marji and the girls in her schools are being forced to wear the veil. 
The traditional gender roles in Iran are that women stay at home, tend to the house, cook the meals and raise the children. While the men go out and work, bring home the money and try to keep a good reputation for their family. Public schools are segregated, there are schools for boys and schools for girls. 
If anyone try's to rebel against these sexist laws they get brutally maimed, killed or sent to jail. The people in Iran just want equallity and peace but the Shah (highest Iranian ruler) believes everyone should practice Islam.
